garvile gurjar

about gurjar - Rahul Khari

Gurjar or Gujjar or Gujar or Goojar are basically a single word and they were used and still have been used depending on the comfort of the speaker. They do not have any difference just pronounced differently. The origin of these different forms of Gurjar community goes back to the history of Kushanas. Kanishka used the term Gusur in his inscriptions. Cunningham also identified Kushans as Gurjars (or Gujjars). Word Gusur is referred in Rabatak inscription of Kushan king Kanishka.According to some scholars the Word Gusur, which means Kulputra or man or woman born in high family, in this inscription stands for Gujar or Gurjaras.Gurjars of Central Asia are termed as Gusur (Gujur) even today.
Alberuni during his visit to India too mentioned Al-Juzr or Al-Jurz, which means Gurjars, as a very powerful king of India.
Another mention about the Gurjar community can be found in the writings of Hiuen Tsang where he also mentioned that the king Kiu-che-lo (Gurjar) rules in the North West and North East of India who is a very powerful king.
The time when for the first time the complete term Gurjar Pratihar was used in Indian subcontinent, in the same century, the Khazars came in power between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. From their they also expanded and there is possibility that Khazars could have tried to enter into India from the present day Pakistan. Khazar and Gurjar resembles a lot. So, there is another possibility of the origin of the word Gurjar from Khazars.
